Initial results of H-mode edge pedestal turbulence evolution with quadrature reflectometer measurements on DIII-D

چکیده
High-resolution quadrature reflectometer measurements of density fluctuation levels have been obtained on DIII-D for H-mode edge pedestal studies. Initial results are presented from the L–H transition to the first ELM for two cases: (i) a low pedestal beta discharge, in which density turbulence in the pedestal has little change during the ELM-free phase, and (ii) a high pedestal beta discharge in which both density and magnetic turbulence are observed to increase before the first ELM. These high beta data are consistent with the existence of electromagnetic turbulence suggested by some transport models. During Type-I ELM cycles, when little magnetic turbulence can be observed, pedestal turbulence increases just after an ELM crash and then decreases before next ELM strikes, in contrast to a drop after ELM crash and then it re-grows when strong magnetic turbulence shows similar behavior. Clear ELM precursors are observed on 620% of Type-I ELMs observed to date. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 52.35.Ra; 52.40.Hf; 52.55.Fa; 52.70. m

SOL and pedestal density profile evolution during DIII-D ELMy and ELM-suppressed H-mode operation
A fast profile reflectometer has been used to study the detailed characteristics of scrape-off-layer (SOL) and pedestal density profile evolution in DIII-D ELMy H-mode plasmas with high temporal (P10 ls) and spatial ( 4 mm) resolution. Results show a significant enhancement in radial particle transport to the outer vessel wall during Type-I ELMs. The radial particle transport time ( 140 ls) bec...
متن کاملQuantitative density fluctuation measurements utilizing quadrature reflectometers on DIII-D
Abstract Fixed-frequency reflectometers utilizing quadrature phase detection are employed on DIII-D to study both coherent and turbulent density fluctuations. For coherent fluctuations, the reconstructed phase information successfully identifies MHD/coherent mode activity, e.g. tearing modes, compressional Alfvén eigenmodes, etc. For an m = 3/n = 2 tearing mode, a basic 1D phase screen model is...

Reciprocating Langmuir probes are used to investigate the structure of electrostatic potentials, E ́ B drifts, and ̄uctuations in the edge (q < 1), scrape-o layer (SOL) and divertor of single null diverted discharges in the DIII-D tokamak. These measurements demonstrate that the X-point geometry suppresses potential ̄uctuations in the drift wave range of frequencies (20 kHz6 f6 300 kHz) as pred...
متن کاملPedestal Turbulence Dynamics in ELMing and ELM-free H-mode Plasmas
Measurements of long wavelength density fluctuations in the pedestal region of DIII-D plasmas have revealed several important features of edge instabilities during type I edge localized mode (ELMing) and ELMfree discharges. These features, measured with a 2D array of beam emission spectroscopy channels, include: toroidal field and spatial dependence of two distinct frequency bands (50–150 kHz a...
متن کامل1 Edge dimensionless identity experiment on DIII - D and Alcator
Experiments were carried out to study the similarity of H-mode (High confinement mode) physics on the Alcator C-Mod [1] and DIII-D [2] tokamaks comparing plasmas with matched local edge dimensionless parameters (β, ρ∗, ν∗, q95) and shape (ε, κ, δ). It was observed that matching local values of the dimensionless parameters on top of the H-mode pedestals produces similar Te and ne profiles across...
